Area Police
Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then discovered many other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the attack made him speechless and required to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
