France to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of protecting human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to snarl the engines of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major step forward, coming after a short-lived shift towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which dropped off when the previous government official departed from government.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
