2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Comes After Mixed Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined vision.

The president noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re excited for that relationship to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to heart and reimagined the title with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our players.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To further the incredible development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, he comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is vast, having spent the recent years producing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all looking forward to continue witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and tests that change every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."

The game lacks an confirmed debut schedule or platforms, but fans can expect further news as production continues.
